Munich’s Christmas Market
As with all holiday traditions, the Bavarian Christmas markets have become a big commercial feature of the merry season. Actually, I have no objections to a Christmas market, but there are at least ten different Christmas markets in Munich. Isn’t that overdoing it? I wonder if they were all as crowded as the one at Marienplatz today. The weather was perfect – seasonably cold for a Christmassy atmosphere and sunny – and the crowds flocked to the stands selling Christmas baubles.
As far as tradition goes, the modern-day Christmas ornament doesn’t have a very long history. It was invented in the German town of Lauscha in the middle of the 19th century.
