Couple in Stone

I wanted to pick up on my theme of photographing fountains. Taking advantage of the mild September day, Janos and I first cycled to a beer garden for a picnic lunch and on the way back stopped at Rotkreuzplatz, a busy square with market stands and shady trees.

Rotkreuzplatz has one of my favorite contemporary fountains,  Steinernes Paar /Couple in Stone (Klaus Schulze,  1984), a humorous and colorful fountain. I like it when contemporary art doesn’t feel it has to be steel, abstract or futuristic.

This couple is fated to sit across from each other for all eternity: maybe a good thing, maybe not. Are they young or old? Are they stolid and phlegmatic or mellow and unperturbed?

Stony silence or mute agreement?
